IIAC RELEASE
DUBUQUE, Iowa - University of Dubuque women's Cross Country standout Fabiola Ortiz broke a 12-year old school record and women's Tennis record Holder Arantxa Martinez went 4-0 as the pair took home Iowa Conference Player of the Week honors in their respective sports.

Coincidentally, both Ortiz and Martinez earned their first career Iowa Conference Player/Runner of the Week honor on September 7, 2014.

Ortiz earned her second career Iowa Conference female runner of the week award after crossing the line in 22:26, a new 6k school record, at the Grinnell Les Duke Invite last Saturday, September 12th. The Elgin, Ill. native's time eclipsed the old 6k school record of 22:38 set in 2004 by Melissa Maestri. Ortiz surpassed her previous personal best of 22:53, set at last year's final meet, by a whopping 27 seconds on a rolling Grinnell course.

The junior continues to break records after becoming the second woman in school history to finish First Team All-Iowa Conference after a 6th place performance a year ago. Ortiz holds indoor records in the 4x800m relay and distance medley relay and sits second in school history in the indoor and outdoor 800m along with the outdoor 1500m.

Ortiz majors in psychology.

Martinez added to her torrid start and claimed her second career Iowa Conference women's tennis player of the week after going 5-1 combined in last week's matches against Simpson, Central, and Coe. In six matches this fall, the San Luis Potosi, Mexico native improved her record to 6-0 in No. 1 singles and 4-2 in No. 1 doubles with partner freshman Marissa Joers.

The 2014 First Team All-Iowa Conference selection beat the defending Iowa Conference Champion from Coe, 7-5, 6-4, to avenge her loss in last year's Iowa Conference Championship game. Martinez and Joers fell to Coe at No. 1 doubles, but rebounded with a pair of wins over Simpson and Central.

The sophomore already owns the single season record in singles (16), doubles (12), and overall wins (28) after last year's stellar freshman season.

Martinez majors in business and marketing.
