Soderstrom Pins Ranked Wrestler to Grab First Career IIAC POW Honor

Dec 1, 2015

Freshman Ethan Soderstrom took home his first career IIAC Wrestler of the Week honor after pinning No. 7 wrestler in the country in 21-17 victory over Augustana (Ill.).

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Freshman Ethan Soderstrom pinned the No. 7 wrestler in the country at 184 lbs. to push the University of Dubuque wrestling team to their first dual win of the season over No. 30 Augustana (Ill.), 21-17, and earn his first career Iowa Conference Wrestler of the Week award.

After incurring a double-digit deficit early in his match against No. 7 Thomas Reyhons, Soderstrom flipped the script to earn the first pin of his career at the 6:14 mark. It was the only pin of the match against Augustana and gave the Spartans the early 12-6 lead en route to the victory.

The Bloomington, Wis. native earned the first decisive win of his career and improved to 2-3 on the season. Soderstrom’s first official win came via a medical forfeit at last week’s Concordia Open.

It is the Spartans first IIAC Wrestler of the Week award since graduated Nic Rivera claimed it at 133 lbs. on January 4 of last season.

Soderstrom and Co. travel to No. 19 Cornell next Thursday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m.
