Spartan Wrestling 3-0 at Chicago Duals

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Dubuque wrestling team enjoyed a short Christmas break and returned to the mat at the 2016 Chicago Duals on Saturday, Jan. 2, and finished the day 3-0 after facing Manchester College (45-6), Ohio Northern (24-20), and UW-Oshkosh (30-6).
Strong finishes by many Spartans helped UD to a clean sweep. Those finishing with 3-0 records included: Julio Chavez earned two falls en route to finishing 3-0 at 125 lbs.; Stephen Rosenberg finished with a fall, a major decision and a decision at 133 lbs.; Jeremy Melendez captured a pair of falls and a decision at 141 lbs.; and Kody Krenz, two falls a decision at 157 lbs.
UD dominated Manchester College by collecting seven falls in the match with the quickest being Chavez in just :57 seconds over Alan Mock. The Spartans lost two close decisions at weight clases 174 and 184 by a 4-6 score. Collin Heidemann would fight his way into overtime at 184, but lost in the first overtime to Alex Roberts.
The Spartans wrestled Ohio Northern to a narrow 24-20 Spartan victory. UD started quick by winning the first five matches by three falls and two narrow decisions. Ohio Northern rallied to win the next five matches, but came up short despite claiming a technical fall and a fall in the 197 and 285 weight classes.
In the third round, the Spartans garnered quick wins by Chavez with a fall in 1:37 at 125 lbs. and a major decision by Rosenberg 13-3 at 133 lbs. Melendez captured the victory at 141 by a 7-2 decision. Adrian Collier lost his first match of the day in a slim 7-8 decision at 149 lbs. The Spartans would win five out of the next six matches to claim the dual.
The Spartans open up the Iowa Conference dual meet season on January 5 against the Simpson College Storm at 7:00 p.m.
