Spartans Wrestling Team Takes Down No. 30 Vikings, 21-17

Nov 24, 2015

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Led by freshman Ethan Soderstrom's tech fall over the No. 7 ranked wrestler in the country at 184 pounds, the University of Dubuque wrestling team won their first dual meet of the season after defeating No. 30 Augustana (Ill.) on the road, 21-17, on Tuesday night.

The Spartans improved to 1-1 in dual meets on the season behind Soderstrom and four other Spartan wins. 149 lbs. senior Adrian Collier started off the match with a bang to win his team-leading seventh match by decision, 12-8. Junior Jonathan Denikas broke a 3-3 tie, with his 5-1 victory at 165 lbs. Denikas has flip-flopped wins and losses this year and sits at 3-3 on the season. Soderstrom's pin gave UD a 12-6 advantage before the Spartans dropped their next three and faced a 17-12 deficit going into the final two bouts.

133 lbs. senior Steve Rosenburg (5-2) and 141 lbs. junior Donovan Luckett (3-2) came through with a tech. fall and a major dec., respectively, to give the Spartans their first win over a ranked opponent this season. Coincidentally, Rosenburg had his first match of the season not determined by decision, while Luckett has yet to finish a match by decision.
