FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Even Saturday Night Live will be wrapping up as the Spartans look to beat Pacific University (Ore.) for the second year in a row in a late night showdown starting at 9:00 p.m. central time on Saturday.
In 2014, the Boxers (1-0) finished the year with the nation’s highest completion percentage at 68.8%, but the Spartans seemed to be the recipients of QB Warner Shaw’s passes after picking off the current senior four times in a 16-10 win a year ago. None were more crucial than cornerback Oscar White’s interception at the goal line on a 3rd-and-goal situation with 1:15 to go that sealed the win for the Spartans. The Spartans scoring punch came from kicker Curtis Prull, who converted three field goals, and quarterback Zach Fry’s 64-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Tyler Rutenbeck.
After scoring 16 points in their first two games, the Spartan defense aims for a low-scoring affair against the 2014 Northwest Conference Co-Champions. The Boxers won a thrilling season opener last week after putting up 32 points, including 20 unanswered in the fourth quarter, in a one-point victory over the College of Idaho. A pair of touchdown passes from Warner Shaw capped a 20-point explosion in the span of less than eight minutes.
The Boxer attack features five All-NWC returners including Shaw and running back junior Kamana Pimental, who rolled up 54 yards and one score last week. Spartan senior linebackers Dylan Hastings and Trevor Stauner, oppose the Pacific offensive and lead the team with 18 and 17 tackles, respectively.
