Volleyball Clinches Tournament Spot in Comeback Victory

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Down two sets to none, the University of Dubuque volleyball team dug deep and won their final three sets in 3-2 victory over Buena Vista on the road Wednesday night.

The Spartans clinched their fifth-straight Iowa Conference tournament berth and snapped their three-game losing streak to Buena Vista. Senior outside hitter Klaudia Basierak registered 29 kills and finished the night with a .217 hitting percentage, despite hitting .000 in the first two sets. The Hainesville, Ill. native also added a game-high four blocks as well.

Like Basierak, UD struggled early but picked it up after starting off with a pair of sub-.100 hitting in the first two sets. The Spartans (15-13, 3-3 Iowa Conference) hit .135, .222, and .304 in the final three sets to claw their way back. 

Junior Hannah Zieser had arguably her best game of the season after talliying a season-high 42 assists, three service aces, and falling one short of her season-best with 10 digs. Libero Kristin Wright collected a game-high 19 digs and paced four Spartans with double-digit digs.

Karrah Davis finished with 13 kills to back up Basierak and also added three service aces and 10 digs to the mix.

The Spartans improved to 26-20 in the all-time series against the Beavers (16-12, 4-2 Iowa Conference) and won for the first time since a 3-1, 2012 victory.

UD will host rival Loras (17-11, 4-2 Iowa Conference) in both teams' final regular season Iowa Conference matchup this Wednesday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. The Duhawks swept Simpson, 3-0, in their last IIAC bout on Tuesday, October 20.
