BOX SCORE
DUBUQUE, Iowa – Midfielder Robyn Wittkopf scored the go-ahead goal with 16 seconds remaining to give the University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team the win in their home opener, 12-11, over Hamline University on Friday night.

Wittkopf came up big with her second goal of the night, but it was UD midfielder Kelly Wetherald that got them there after scoring a season-high five goals.

Wetherald’s fifth goal of the game gave the Spartans (2-1) the 11-7 edge with 15:47 to go in the game, but Hamline clawed back. Four straight goals in the span of 10 minutes by the Pipers (2-1) tied it up at 11 at the 5:01 mark until Wittkopf finished them off.

The Spartans never trailed in a hotly contested match that saw UD win multiple stat categories by the slimmest of margins: 35-29 in shots, 29-27 on ground balls, and 20-21 in turnovers.

Hamline was led by three goals apiece by Dana Almquist and Lindsey Jackman. Almquist gave the Pipers the quick 1-0 lead, but the Spartans responded with six unanswered that led to an 8-5 edge at the break.

Behind freshman goalkeeper Kaley Weir’s (2-1) 10 saves, the Spartans beat a Hamline team that outscored its first two opponents, 29-8.

UD will face Concordia University-Chicago on Wednesday, March 23 at home starting at 5:00 p.m.
