Baseball Set To Begin IIAC Action

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team hosts its first three-game home series this weekend when the Central College Dutch come to town from March 23-24. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 12:00 p.m. and a single game on Saturday with first pitch at 12:00 p.m. It is also the first games at newly renovated Dan W. Runkle Field.

The Spartans have opened the season with a 3-7 record after going 1-6 on the spring break trip. Through ten games in 2018, Jarad Clevenger leads UD with a batting average of .343. Thomas Kempf and Tyler Imirch both have knocked in seven RBI’s. Imirch also has a staggering slugging percentage of .543, totaling 19 total bases on 11 hits.

Tyler Carlson, Doug Van Dyke and Chase Kueter have combined for seven starts on the mound. Carlson heads into IIAC play with a 1-0 record and 3.00 ERA after 12 innings pitched.

Central comes into the weekend with a mark of 9-5, playing all 14 of their games in Florida over a 12 day stretch. The Dutch offense is powered by Garrett Saunders, who is hitting .525 with 13 RBI and nine doubles.

Central leads the all-time series against UD, 70-54. The Spartans swept all three games in the 2017 series by scores of 8-5, 10-9 and 2-1.

UD Athletic Director, Dan Runkle, who the field was dedicated after on homecoming weekend, will throw out the first pitch before Friday’s game.
