Spartans Earn ABCA/Rawlings All-Region (Central) Honors
Jul 2, 2018
The 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Div. III All-Region teams and Regional Players of the Year have been announced in all eight regions. The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. III All-America Committee.
The University of Dubuque claimed two members of the ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region Team in 2018. Chase Kueter (RHP, R/R, 6-2, 185, Jr., Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue H.S.) and fellow pitcher Nathan Schneiderman (LHP, L/L, 6-5, 220, Jr., German Valley, Ill./Forreston H.S.) earned the prestigious honors for the Spartans.
The Spartans pitching staff dominated opposing batters all season long, setting staff records for ERA (3.58) and strikeouts (292). Each of the weekend starters posted a 3.19 ERA or better, with two of the three posting a sub 3.00 ERA. Kueter led all UD pitchers with a 2.68 ERA and school records of innings pitched at 94.0 and strikeouts with 78. Nathan Schneider man continued to be brilliant out of the bullpen and now has the UD career saves record of 13 after completing his junior season.
The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school.
The Chair of the ABCA NCAA Div. III All-America & Coach of the Year Committee is Matt LaBranche of Eastern Connecticut State. Also on the committee are Paul Hesse (University of Mt. Union), Corey Paluga (Elmira College), Dean Glus (The College of New Jersey), Ray Hedrick (Randolph-Macon College), Luke Johnson (North Park University), Kevin Tomasiewicz (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh) and Scott Winterburn (University of La Verne).
The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 9,600 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 75th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 3-6, 2019 in Dallas, Texas.
