DUBUQUE, Iowa – After tying the game with 18 seconds remaining in the game, the University of Dubuque women’s soccer team fell in the Iowa Conference Tournament Semifinals to Luther College in a shootout, on a cold and wet night in Dubuque.
Dubuque, Univ. of 1, Luther College 1 (4-3 Luther in PK’s)
How It Happened
-Each team spent the first 14 minutes figuring out the weather conditions and the other team, UD’s Lauren Cangelosi finally fired off the first shot of the game in the 15th minute.
-Luther’s got on the board in the 27th minute when Ellie Schmid received a pass from McKenzie Lundquist on a break and snuck it past UD’s goalkeeper Victoria Roethler.
-The Norse controlled the offense for about the first 75 minutes but the Spartans turned it around and cranked up their attack, getting off four shots in the final eight minutes of regulation.
-With time winding down, all 11 Spartans sprinted forward and Cangelosi raced to get a corner kick set up, where she sent a perfect ball into the box where it found Amanda Chlebek’s head and went into the back of the net to tie the game with 18 seconds left and send the Spartan crowd into a frenzy.
-UD got the only shot off in the first overtime and both teams each had one shot in the second before the game went into a PK shootout.
-After both teams made their first PK, each missed their next two shots to make it 1-1 with two shooters left.
-Both teams made their fourth shot and Luther started the fifth round with a make, when UD sent their goalie out to take the kick and try to extend the shootout. Victoria Roethler sent a rocket into the left side of the net to force another round.
-Sommer Stevens made Luther’s sixth attempt and UD’s Carissa Brown hit the crossbar to give Luther the shootout win.
