DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque and Loras College softball teams joined forces on Saturday in the annual StrikeOut Cancer game.  The UD vs. Loras softball series enters it’s seventh year in conjunction with NFCA Association and American Cancer Society’s annual StrikeOut Cancer initiative and have combined to raise $14,156.26 to date.

The StrikeOut Cancer initiative is a program through the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to help raise funds and awareness to fight cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of fastpitch softball coaches nationwide to help increase cancer education and promote healthy living through awareness efforts and fundraising activities and nearly $400,000 was raised in 2017.

Errors were costly for the Spartans on Saturday, they committed three in the first game and four in the second game. UD was held to a combined 12 hits as Loras swept the Spartans by an 8-0 and 7-6 score. UD grabbed the lead late in game two with a one run advantage at the top of the seventh. An error would prove costly as the Duhawks scored two to re-take the lead and the victory.

The Spartans continue IIAC schedule when they travel to face the Wartburg College Knights for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 22 in Waverly, Iowa at 2:00 p.m. The Spartans return home in a re-scheduled game on Tuesday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. vs. the Coe College Kohawks. Wednesday the Spartans jump on a bus and travel across highway 20 to western Iowa to face the Buena Vista University Beavers at 3:00 p.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa. UD will finish conference play on April 28 on Senior and Alumni Day when the Spartans host the Central College Dutch at 1:00 p.m. in Dubuque.
