Volleyball Opens IIAC Play With Thrilling Win

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team opened Iowa Conference action on Wednesday night agaisnt Luther College, where they took down the Norse in five sets and after trailing 2-1 to remain undefeated.

Set one was a back and fourth battle and no one could quite pull away until the Spartans rallied off three straight points at the end to jump ahead 1-0. In set two, Luther jumped out to a nine point lead early and looked like they would sail to an easy set win but the Spartans battle back and cut their deficit to two multiple times but the Norse pulled away near the end to even the match at 1-1.

The Spartans led by six points in set three, however the Norse went on a run to take the set and go up 2-1. UD did not let the blown lead in the third set phase them as they jumped right back out to another big lead in set four to fire up the big crowd and UD coasted to a set four win.

Trailing 2-4 in the fifth set, the Spartans rattled off five straight points and and ten of the next 11 points to build up an 11-5 lead. Luther had one last push but with the scored 14-9 in favor of UD and the crowd on their feet Karrah Davis spiked a set from Alyssa Cose to end the match and give UD the victory.

UD moved to 8-0 on the season, the best start for the program since they started 15-0 in 1981. They are back in action this on Friday and Saturday with four matches in Galesburg, Ill.
