Women's Basketball Slowed By Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team ran into a buzz saw on Wednesday night, losing to Simpson College 85-65.

UD did not have much of an answer for the hot shooting Storm on Wednesday night. After back and forth first few minutes in which there were three lead changes and two ties, Simpson went on 15-4 run over the final 5:20 of the first quarter and the Spartans trailed 24-14 after the first quarter and would not be able to get back within single digits again. Simpson sank 69.2% (9-13) of their shots in the first, including 4-5 from three. The Spartans cold spell carried over to the second quarter where they were limited to just nine points and trailed 45-23 at halftime

Despite the Spartan deficit growing to as many as 25 points midway through the third quarter, the Spartans continued to fight, cutting the in half at one point. UD would outscore Simpson, 42-40 in the second half.

Two Spartan players scored in double figures, Abbey Meyer and Morgan Boer each netted 16 points. Abbey Meyer also led the team in rebounds, collecting eight in the game.

UD was limited to 37% shooting and 22% from behind the arc, while Simpson shot a staggering 54% for the game and 56% from three. The Spartans did outrebound the Storm, 41-36 and 18-6 on the offensive glass.  

UD is back on the road on Saturday to face #2 Wartburg in Waverly. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
