BOX SCORE vs. Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque kept their chance alive for another conference tournament title after beating the Simpson College Storm by a 17-6 final on Saturday. Heavy rain played a factor with each offense turning the ball over multiple times in the contest. The two squads would combine for seven interceptions as the wet slippery ball found it's liking to the two teams defensive specialists.

Maurece Herrion pounded the ball up the wet, water logged field 26 times for the game high 157 yards rushing with a touchdown, which left him just eight yards shy of becoming the school's all-time rush leader with 3,046 yards (record held by Justin Spaulding 2009-11 with 3,054 yards). Teammate Dwayne Allen Jr. would trail not far behind on Saturday with 30 rushes for 145 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Sean Duffy would finish the challenging conditions with 7-21 for 137 yards in the air. Emanuel Jenkins led the receiving corps with four catches for 44 yards.

Chad Marsh led the Spartan defensive unit with 15 tackles, 1.5 tackles for losses of five yards, an interception, and .5 a sack. Jacob Owens grabbed 13 tackles and a pass breakup as teammate Logan Benter ended the afternoon with 10 tackles, 1.5 for losses of six yards, an interception, and .5 sack for loss of four yards.

In special teams, kicker Tyler Sheffield booted three in kickoffs for touchbacks for an average of 62.5 yards on Saturday. Andy Vujovinich was a perfect 1-1 in field goals (29 yards) and punted four times for 161 yards (40.2 average) and placed one inside the 20 and had a pair of touchbacks. A.J. Junter returned two kickoffs for 49 yards to give the Spartans some field to work with on offense.

The Spartans (6-1 in A-R-C) will host the Wartburg College Knights (6-1 in A-R-C) next week for the conference championship in Dubuque. Game time is 1 p.m. on Chalmers Field.
