Men's Soccer Falls to #18 UW-Platteville in Overtime

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s soccer team battled the 18th ranked, UW-Platteville Pioneers until the end of Saturday afternoon but came up just short in overtime, losing 1-0.

How It Happened
-UD had first two shots on goal in the 14th and 18th minutes, but neither were great scoring chances.
-Back to back corners for the Pioneers in the 22nd minute but the UD defense held strong.
-Chris Rigby had a free kick for the Spartans at the top of the 18 yard box in the 26th minute and found a way to get the ball through the Pioneer wall, but the Pioneers slowed it down just enough for their goalie to corral it.
-The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0 but UW-Platteville outshot UD, 15-4. However, UD had more shots on goal at 3-2.
-The Pioneers had three great scoring chances in the first three minutes of the second half to break the tie but both two shots sailed just high and one was saved by Brandon White.
-Gloire Luwara got loose on the left side of the field in the 58th but his just went into the left side of the net.
-UD had one of their best scoring chances come in the 60th minute, when Chris Rigby set up Alessandro Corazzina for a fast break and thought he scored but was called offside.
-With 14 minutes remaining, UD’s Zach Elias floated a shot from about 30 yards out, which looked like it may drop into the net but it hit the corner of the post and the crossbar.
-Moments after UD’s shot had just drilled the post , Platteville had a great look of their own that went off the post to keep the game scoreless heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
-With under 40 seconds left, a pass from Rigby into the box was deflected multiple times and ended up with Gloire Luwara from about five yards out for a shot at point blank range, to put the game away, but the shot was saved and deflected out of play to send the match to extra time.
-Each team got at least one shot off in overtime before UWP’s Teon Fountain broke free on a breakaway and got the ball pasted UD goalie Brandon White, the ball then went off the post and trickled its way into the net for the Pioneer game winner.
