Women's Basketball Drops Uptempo Affair, 95-85

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team broke the 80 point mark for the fourth time in six games but fell to conference foe, Nebraska Wesleyan, 95-85.

UD led for a majority of the first quarter until Nebraska Wesleyan but with three minutes remaining in the quarter NWU made their first run of the game. With UD leading 23-18, the Prairie Wolves went on a 15-0 run to end the quarter.

The UD deficit would hang around 10 points for most of the second quarter, but this time it was the Spartans turn to end the quarter on a big run. A Jaden Kelley buzzer beater from the top of the key put the Spartans back even with Nebraska Wesleyan heading into the break at 53-53.

The two teams traded baskets for the first six and a half minutes of the third quarter, with neither team getting ahead by more than three points. A five-point burst from the Prairie Wolves gave NWU a five-point lead with 2:43 left in the third and the Spartans would never lead again.

Nebraska Wesleyan scored the first 10 points of the second half and the Spartans could never recover, only getting as close as eight points three different times, all of which came in the final 2:17 of play.

Five different Spartans reached double figures on Saturday, led by Tabria Thomas and Jaden Kelly with 15 each. 13 of Thomas’ 15 points came in the first half. After scoring 12 and 10 points in the first half respectively, Abigail Zurcher and Allie Bailey each finished with 14. Miah Smith was the fifth Spartan in double digits with 13.

Thomas and Smith both recorded double-doubles as well with 11 and 15 rebounds, respectively.

This Spartans are now 3-1 while scoring 80 points of more in a game this seasonn.

The Spartans are off next week for finals before returning to action on Tuesday, Dec, 17th when UD hosts Rockford at 6 p.m.
