Your role as a parent/guardian has had an impact on the vocational path of your student. Through collaboration with the Office of Vocation, Career Services, & Community Engagement, together we can support your student on their journey to become successful professionals in a global community.

Q: When can a student start meeting with the professional staff of Vocation, Career Services, & Community Service?

A: Today! Students are encouraged to set up an appointment for an individual consultation with the staff by using Handshake. We will help the student based on where they are in their process - exploring careers, internship searches, applying for jobs. It is never too early or too late to start the conversation!

Q: Should my student become involved on campus or get a work study position?

A: Yes! These experiences will help develop transferable skills your student will use in future employment opportunities and also build strong networks as they move their UD experience and beyond.

Q: Should I give my student feedback on their resume?

A: Of course! An extra set of eyes on a resume always helps to catch any typos or errors. But be open to the format or information included as there are a lot of ways to write a good resume.

Q: Will there be employer events or career fairs for my student to attend?

A: Absolutely! We communicate opportunities to students through a variety of platforms to help get the word out. Follow our page, Center for Advising & Vocation on Facebook and tag your student in opportunities and events that are posted.

Q: What if I have a job or internship that I want to share with UD students?

A: Great! We use Handshake for all of our job postings for students and alumni. If you already have a Handshake account, add University of Dubuque to Your Schools. If you do not have a Handshake account, you can create your free account at dbq.joinhandshake.com.

Q: Do you know where I can donate all these professional clothes I no longer use?

A: You bet! Donate your new and gently used professional clothing that is clean and free of stains, holes, and odor. Donations may be dropped off during scheduled open hours in the Center for Advising & Vocation, lower level, Peters Commons.
