Spartans Track & Field Competes at UW Red and White Open

MADISON, WISCONSIN – The University of Dubuque Track and Field teams competed in the Wisconsin Red and White Open on Friday, February 15. The Spartans men’s team won three events while the women’s team had two second place finishes. Teams competing included Dubuque, Division 1 – University of Wisconsin, Ashford, Concordia, Edgewood, Rockford, UW-La Crosse, Viterbo, and numerous Unattached runners. No team scores were kept.

Freshman Sprinter Corey Broussard (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) set a new UD school record with his 60m Dash winning time of 6.90 seconds. Broussard’s time is the 10th fastest in DIII and tops in the Iowa Conference. Phillip Jones(South Holland, Ill./Thornwood) is currently second while Tyrone Galvin (Madison, Wis./Madison East) is fourth in the IIAC in the 60m Dash.

Iowa Conference Indoor Track & Field (Field) Performer of the Week Kevin Jamison (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West) picked up his second consecutive win of the indoor season in the Triple Jump with a leap of 45’ 3.0”. He now has four Top 3 finishes and has finished no lower than fifth in five meets.

The Men’s 4x400m Relay team of Lamar Benjamin (Tuscon, Ariz./Hohenfels),  Ryan Mattingly (Janesville, Iowa/Janesville),Andy Sierra (Fruitland, Iowa/Louisa-Muscatine), and JaVaughn Busch (Chicago, Ill./Senior) also took home a first place finish for the Spartans with a time of 3:29.67 seconds. 

Competing in the Triple Jump for the first time this season, sophomore Nicki McKenzie (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) finished second with a jump of 36’ 1.5”. The leap by McKenzie is the second best in school history and second best in the IIAC this year. Freshman Randi Bodish (Guttenberg, Iowa/Clayton Ridge) finished second in the 200m Dash with a time of 28.13 seconds.

Other notable performances on the men’s side include Christopher Watson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) with a third place finish in the High Jump at 6’ 1.25”. A pair of Spartans with local ties finished third with Kebba Bojang (Madison, Wis./Madison East) in the Triple Jump at 43’ 1.0” and Evan Zurbuchen (Hollandale, Wis./Madison West) in the 60m Hurdles at 8.59 seconds.

Local Madison talent Leigha Hodge (Madison, Wis./Lafollette) finished third in the 60m Dash at 8.24 seconds. Brenda Nava(Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) took third in the 800m Run with a 2:35.22 performance. High Jumper Alexis Higgins (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) also placed third at 5’ 3.25”.
