Broussard Earns IIAC Track Performer of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther diver Zoe Johnson and swimmer Jason Orvis have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 17, 2013. The Conference also named Performers of the Week in eight sports.

University of Dubuque freshman Corey Broussard (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) was named IIAC Men's Indoor Track and Field (Track) Performer of the Week. Broussard won the 60m Dash at the University of Wisconsin Red and White Open on Friday, February 15th with a school record 6.90 second time. He beat three Division 1 runners in the finals. His time is the 11th fastest in DIII and tops in the Iowa Conference heading into the 2013 IIAC Championships this weekend at UD. Dubuque currently has three of the top four Iowa Conference times in the 60m Dash with Broussard (1st - 6.90), Phillip Jones (3rd - 6.96), and Tyrone Galvin (4th - 7.03).

Broussard is the third Spartan sprinter to win Track and Field Performer of the Week along with Galvin on January 14th and Jones on January 21st. Fellow freshman Kevin Jamison also won the award for his field efforts on February 11th.

The trio of UD sprinters have big shoes to fill at the upcoming IIAC Championships as Spartans sprinters have won eight of the last nine 55/60m Dashes. Past champions include Gregg Wiersema (2004), Duanta Peterson (2005), Jean Metezier (2006, 2007), Orlando Walton (2008), Davivorn Dowe (2010, 2012), and Phillip Jones (2011).
