Spartans Fall to #5 St. Thomas

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - The University of Dubuque Baseball team went toe-to-toe with one of the nation’s best Division III programs on Tuesday afternoon in the Metrodome. The Spartans lost both games of the doubleheader to #5 St. Thomas by one run. In the opener, UD lost 3-2 followed by a 4-3 loss in game two. Dubuque is now 0-6 on the season.

Game 1: UD-2, St. Thomas-3 BOX SCORE
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a Michael Riordan (Naperville, Ill./Central) single that scored Spencer Kuehn (Dana Hills, Calif./Dana Hills). Riordan finished the game 2-3 with a triple, run scored, and RBI. St. Thomas pushed across one run in the third and two in the fourth off starting pitcher Kuehn to take a 3-1 lead. UD would get one run back in the fifth after Riordan tripled to start the inning.  Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) would follow with a ground ball to shortstop a score Riordan. 

Kuehn pitched all six inning allowing four hits and three earned runs. Kuehn struck out five in the complete game effort.

Game 2: UD-3, St. Thomas-4 BOX SCORE 
UD once again stayed with the fifth ranked Tommies falling short in another one run game. The Spartans loss was their fourth by one run this season. After keeping the Spartans in game one on the mound, Kuehn stepped up for the Spartans at the plate in the second game with two doubles. Chris Briggs (Lombard, Ill./Montini) finished the game 2-3 including a long single in the seventh inning off the right field wall.

Joey Kilsdonk (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) took the loss on the mound. Kilsdonk pitched four innings allowing three earned runs and five hits. Alan Kopp (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) retired all four hitter he faced.

The Spartans out hit St. Thomas 9-7.
