Meyer Named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque softball player Amber Meyer (Cascade, Iowa/Cascade) and Loras College baseball player Mike Canevello have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 24, 2013. The Iowa Conference also announced its Performers of the Week in five spring sports --- baseball, softball, men's tennis and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Meyer had an outstanding spring trip for the Spartans splitting time between catcher and centerfield. In eight games last week, she hit .583 (14-24) with two homeruns, eight runs scored, eight runs batted in, and stole five bases. She posted a .958 slugging percentage and .615 on base percentage as well. The junior did not commit an error in 21 chances on defense.  Meyer recorded four multi-hit games while also hitting safely in all eight games. During the 10 games on the spring trip, Meyer hit .548 (17-31) with 2-doubles, a triple, 2-homeruns, 11-runs batted in, 8-runs scored, and a .871 slugging percentage as the Spartans went 5-5.

On the season, Meyer leads the IIAC in slugging percentage (.841), is second in batting average (.545), and third in on base percentage (.583). She is also tied for third in home runs with three. Meyer has hit safely in all 14 games this season. She currently leads the Spartans in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, home runs, total bases, stolen bases, and has started all 14 games.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will return to action on Monday, April 1st at Clarke University (4-6) at 4:00 pm. UD games vs. UW-La Crosse (March 27th, rescheduled for April 4th) and Mt. Mercy (March 29th) were cancelled this week.
