Spartans Split on Senior Day

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Baseball team honored its 13 seniors between games against Luther College (9-13, 5-9) on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans took Game 1 2-0 behind a masterpiece on the mound by Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills). Kuehn struck out seven hitters and allowed only one hit. Dubuque lost the second game, 9-2. UD is now 7-17 overall and 5-11 in the Iowa Conference.

For the second straight outing, Spencer Kuehn earned the win on the mound while also coming through with a key hit at the plate. Kuehn pitched all seven innings, allowing only two base runners while striking out seven. The senior pitcher/outfielder came through at the plate with a RBI single in the third inning.

Both runs for UD came in the third inning as the Spartans scored two runs on four hits. With one out, Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) started the rally with a single to right field.  Parisi would advance to second on a single by Kyle Duggan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar).  After an Andy Danna (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) fielders choice, Austin Monfross (Big Timber, Mont./Sweet Grass) broke the 0-0 tie with a RBI single to score Parisi. Kuehn followed with a single to center field to score Danna and make the score 2-0.

Monfross led the Spartans at the plate with a perfect 3-3 day including a double.

The Spartans did not commit an error in the game while also turning two double plays.

Game 2: Dubuque-2, Luther-9  BOX SCORE
UD was forced to settle for a split after some timely hitting from Luther broke open a 0-0 game with a three run triple in the fifth inning. The Spartans were able to answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI Double by Danna that scored Chris Briggs (Lombard, Ill./Montini).

Danna, Kuehn, and Noah Mahlik (Green Bay, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) each had two hits in the game.  The Spartans were aggressive on the bases in game two with Danna stealing two bases and Mahlik taking another.

Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) took the loss on the mound allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings. Martin had a no-hitter for 4 1/3 innings.  Alan Kopp (Verona, Wis./Verona) pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball to keep the game close through seven innings.

Luther managed to score three runs in the eighth and ninth inning to take a 9-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth. Dubuque would score one run in the ninth on a Kuehn single to left center that scored Danna.

All 11 Spartan senior position players played in Game Two.
