WAVERLY, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Baseball team faced a difficult challenge on Friday afternoon with the #20 ranked Wartburg Knights. The Spartans lost game 1, 5-0 and dropped the second game 15-3 in eight innings. UD will not have to wait long to get another shot at Wartburg as they will square off again on Saturday for another doubleheader. Dubuque is now 8-20 overall and 6-14 in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans are a game out of sixth place and the final spot in the IIAC Tournament.

Game 1: UD-0, Wartburg-5 BOX SCORE
The Spartans opened the weekend with senior Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hill) on the mound looking to quiet the Knights bats. Kuehn held Wartburg scoreless through four innings before allowing two runs on a two out bases loaded single that put UD down 2-0.

UD had its best scoring opportunity in the third inning when Kyle Duggan (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) led off the inning with a double to left field. Unfortunately the next three hitters were retired to end the threat.

Kuehn pitched all six innings to take the loss for UD allowing nine hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and walked two.

Jordan Gawronski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) each had singles in the game.

Game 2: UD-3, Wartburg-15 BOX SCORE
The second game of the doubleheader did not go the Spartans way as Wartburg scored in every inning between the third and eighth to end the game early. UD scored all three runs in the sixth inning with two coming on a home run by Kuehn.

Trailing 7-0 after five innings, the Spartans mounted a comeback with three runs on two hits and a walk in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Wartburg lead to 7-3. Parisi led off the inning with a double to right field and pinch hitter Aaron Laskowski (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) drew a walk to give UD runners on first and second with no outs. A double steal by Parisi and Laskowski allowed Andrew Danna (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) the opportunity to drive in the first run of the day for UD on a groundball to the second baseman. Kuehn then followed with a two run home run to left field.

Michael Campbell (Clinton, Mo./Clinton) doubled in the second inning.

Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was the losing pitcher for UD. In four innings of work he allowed five earned runs on seven hits.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will play two more game at Wartburg on Saturday, April 27th. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
