Apr 27, 2013 | UD Sports Info

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team played their fourth ranked team in the Iowa Conference this season, but it was the #10-ranked Coe College Kohawks who came away with the sweep. The Spartans lost the opener 0-8 after being held to just three hits in the loss. Jennifer Pohlman garnered a double for the Spartans. In game two, UD jumped out to an early lead 1-0 and held it through 2 1/2 innings before Coe knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. The Kohawks scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to capture a sweep with a victory 2-1 in the second of the doubleheader.

Despite dropping the pair of games on Saturday, the Spartans are the #5 seed in the 2013 Iowa Conference Tournament which begins on May 2 at Coe College. Coe has earned the privilege of hosting this year’s tournament based on the tiebreaker criteria listed below. Central will be the No. 2 seed.

Our tiebreakers, in order, are:

2.       Best winning percentage against teams seeded higher (not applicable; there are no teams seeded higher)

3.       Least runs per game allowed in conference play. (Using whole numbers since both played all 14 IIAC games---Coe 30, Central 36)

The rest of the field falls in line as follows:

No. 3 Luther (9-5 IIAC)

No. 4 Simpson (8-6 IIAC)
