University of Dubuque Announces 2013 Commencement Ceremonies

The University of Dubuque today announced the calendar of events for its 161th Commencement for 450 undergraduate, graduate, and seminary students.
College Commencement Events
The College Baccalaureate Service will be held Friday, May 17, at 5:00 p.m. in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall. This year’s Baccalaureate Service speaker will be Lindsay Konken, director of student activities.
Following the Baccalaureate Service, the University will host the annual Senior Dinner for graduating seniors and their families at the Grand River Center (by invitation only) in the Ballroom.
The University of Dubuque will confer degrees on 344 undergraduate and 85 graduate students during its 161th College Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center on the University of Dubuque Campus. Dr. Barbara Reid, assistant professor of nursing and assistant department head will deliver the Commencement Address, titled Now You’re Ready.
Reid joined the University of Dubuque in 2008 as assistant professor of nursing. During her tenure, she has served as both interim and assistant department head. She holds a bachelors degree from Thomas Edison State College, a masters of nursing from the University of Washington, and the doctorate in worship studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. Reid’s diverse education and interests reflect UD’s commitment to the development of the whole person, from the physical to the spiritual. She has extensive experience as a clinical nurse and as a nurse educator. She is also an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches USA and regularly fills the pulpit of churches in the Tri-state area.
Seminary Commencement Events
The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary Baccalaureate Service will be held Friday, May 17, at 9:30 a.m. in Blades Chapel. Dr. Les Longden, associate professor of evangelism and discipleship, will deliver the homily.
The University’s Seminary will confer degrees on 36 students – 31 residential and distance master of divinity, 2 master of missional Christianity, and 3 doctor of ministry – during the Seminary Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall.
Rev. Dr. Hunter Farrell, director of World Mission for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), will deliver the Seminary’s Commencement Address, titled Unlawful Missional.
In his appointment with the General Assembly Mission Council (GAMC) – where he has served since 2007 – Dr. Farrell brings together the energy, creativity, resources, and commitment of thousands of congregations across the Church. Prior to his appointment with GAMC, Dr. Farrell served as a PCUSA missionary in Africa and South America including Zaire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Before serving at the PCUSA National Church level, Hunter and his wife, Ruth, served for a decade as mission co-workers in Lima, Peru, teaching New Testament and mission and working in Christian community organizing.
