May 5, 2013

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team scored first in the Iowa Conference Tournament Semi-finals on Sunday morning, but the top-seeded hosts of Coe College battled back to take the contest by a 5-3 score.

The Spartans were held scoreless through two innings before a two out rally gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead at the top of the third inning. It all started when Jennifer Pohlman singled down the left field line. Shawna Dole moved Pohlman to second with a single through the leftside. Meggie Schmidt then stepped up and crushed a three-run homerun to left center for the first score of the ballgame.

Coe would dig their way out of the deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to knot the game 3-3. The two squads would hold one another scoreless for two more innings before the Kohawks hit a solo homerun with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles scored an additional run as the Kohawks ended the sixth inning with a lead, 5-3.

One final at bat for the Spartans would finish with a ground out unassisted at first base, a fly out to leftfield, and a ground out to the pitcher.

The Spartans (16-18 overall) fell short of the IIAC Tournament Championship game, but they did force the Kohawks (32-5 overall) to play errorless ball in the semi-finals. UD finished with seven hits and gave up eight hits to the Kohawks. Pohlman, Schmidt, and Susie Danielewski all finished with two hits in the loss.
