Spartans Improve to 3-0

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team continued its strong start to the 2013 with a convincing victory on Friday afternoon. After a slow start, the Spartans exploded for six goals in the second half on their way to a 7-1 victory over Lawrence University (0-1). Iowa Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Performer of the Week, Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) scored three goals and assisted on another to lead UD. Dubuque is 3-0 on the season. 

The Spartans controlled every aspect of the first half on their way to a 1-0 lead at the break. UD held a 15-1 lead in shots, 4-0 advantage in corner kicks, and held Lawrence without a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. The lone goal in the first period came from Watkins in the 28th minute as she was able to free herself in the box and beat the goalkeeper. Liz Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) assisted on the goal.  

The second half was all Spartans with Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) scoring two goals in ten seconds after Lawrence tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half. Watkins then got into the second period scoring with two goals of her own to put the game out of reach at 5-1. Katie Lynn (Fox River Grove, Ill./Barrington) assisted on each of the first three goals on the second half. 

UD continued to push the pace of action with Caitlin Crane (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) scoring her first goal of the season in the 78th minute of play. Brianna Burkhart (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) assisted on the goal by Crane and scored one of her own with less than two minutes remaining in the game for her first career goal. Jamie Spate (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) and Abbey Peterson (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) assisted on the goal by Burkhart.

Tiffany Duncan (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) earned the win in goal. Duncan recorded one save and allowed one goal playing the first 78:47. Chelsea Hawkins (Maryland Heights, Mo./Pattonville) relieved Duncan and recorded two saves. 

Dubuque finished the game with a 32-7 advantage in shots and 9-3 lead in corner kick attempts.
