Volleyball at IIAC/NACC Challenge

WISCONSIN DELLS, WISCONSIN - The University of Dubuque Volleyball team took part in the inaugural Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference Challenge Series on Friday night and Saturday afternoon at the Just A Game Fieldhouse. UD began the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Lakeland College and a 3-0 loss to Dominican. The Spartans came back early Saturday morning with a 3-0 loss to Beneditine before finishing the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Edgewood. The Spartans four opponents have a combined record of 9-1 in NACC only games.

The Spartans jumped to an early lead in the weekends opening game with a 25-22 victory in the first set before losing the next three sets. Klaudia Basierak (Hainesville, Ill./Grayslake) led the Spartans with 15 kills and two aces. Anna Runge (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport North) finished with the highest attack percentage (.267) with seven kills and three errors on 15 attacks. Five Spartans finished with double digit digs totals, led by Morgan Werkheiser (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) with 15. The Spartans used dual setters in the contest with Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) recording 17 assists and Hannah Zieser (Edgewood, Iowa/Edgewood-Colesburg) picking up 15 set assists. Runge also picked up one solo block and three assisted blocks.

UD ran into an experienced Dominican team in their second game of the weekend as they lost 3-0. Freshman Brianna Bautsch (Galena, Ill./Galena) led the Spartans with six kills and two assisted blocks. Jen Pohlman (West Branch, Iowa/West Branch) had four kills and no errors in ten attacks. Zieser finished with ten set assists. Nicole Toro (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) had a team high 23 digs.

The Spartans got right back into the action on Saturday morning with Benedictine taking the 3-0 victory. Basierak was the lone Spartan to reach double digit kills with 10. Zieser once again led UD with 14 assists. Toro led the team in digs for the second consecutive game with 14 digs.

UD finished the IIAC/NACC Challenge series with a weekend best 49 kills and .165 attack percentage vs. Edgewood. Caitlin Simbeck (Bayfield, Colo./Bayfield) finished with a double-double recording 11 kills and 16 digs.  Basierak led the Spartans with 12 kills. Zieser set a new season high in the contest with 33 set assists. Toro once again finished with a team best digs with 26 in the contest.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Central College on October 1st on Jon Davison Court inside Stoltz Sports Center at 7:30 pm. The Junior Varsity will play at 6:00 pm.
