Spartans Keep Dutch Winless in League Play

Oct 1, 2013

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Universty of Dubuque volleyball team captured the Iowa Conference match-up on Tuesday night on Jon Davison Court over the Central College Dutch by a 3-2 score (25-22, 12-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-12). The two squads were a vision of balance, one team would surge, then the other would rally back. In the end it was the Spartans capturing the fifth set and match by a 15-12 score.

The Spartans win might have not been the prettiest victory, but they were able to rotate 17 student-athletes throughout the contest and never gave up to improve to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in the IIAC.

Brianna Bautsch  led the Spartans with 12 kills trailed by teammates Klaudia Basierak who added 10 and Amy Tranel who finished with 9 kills. Meggie Schmidt finished with 37 set assists, 11 digs one solo and one assisted block. Morgan Werkheiser, Olivia Larson and Nicole Toro led the defensive side with a combined 54 digs.

The Spartans held the Dutch to a .160 hitting percentage.

Next up for the Spartans is another road weekend as they travel to compete in the St. Mary's Invitational in Winona, Minn on Oct. 4-5. UD returns back to Stoltz Sports Center on Oct. 9 when they host Luther on homecoming week.
