Spartans Win on the Road

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team picked up a hard earned IIAC road victory on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans 2-1 victory over Coe was their first road victory of the year. Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Kolbe) scored what turned out to be the game winner on a Penalty Kick in the 80th minute of play. UD is 4-8-1 on the year and 2-2-0 in the Iowa Conference. 

UD and Coe played a scoreless first half in which both defenses limited the scoring opportunities. Dubuque finished the period with a 5-3 shot advantage while Coe held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. Neither team recorded a shot over the last 16 minutes for the first half. 

The Spartans opened the second half scoring with a goal by Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim) in which he floated the ball over the drawn out goalkeepers head. The goal by Wiley in the 54th minute was his second of the year. Peter Hager (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) assisted on the goal. 

Freshman Andrew Guelle (Breckenheim, Germany/Heidelberg) setup the Spartans with a PK opportunity after he intercepting a pass and was tackled in the box. Hernandez stepped up the the penalty kick line and scored on a low liner to the right side of the goal to give UD a 2-0 lead.

Coe scored on a header with less than four minutes to play to deny UD goalkeeper Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) the shutout. Resendiz finished with one save to earn the win. 

The Spartans finished the game with a 18-7 advantage in shots and 8-2 lead in shots on goal. 

Wiley, Abraham Gonzalez (Santa Paula, Calif./Sant Paula), and Jack Stefanski (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) have started all 13 games this year. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to action on October 19th versus Wartburg College (10-2-2, 4-0). Game time at Oyen Field is 3:30 pm.
