Spartans Lose Defensive Showdown

PLATTEVILLE, WISCONSIN - The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer was unable to get the offense going on Wednesday night at UW-Platteville. The Spartans 1-0 loss to the Pioneers featured two teams with shutdown defenses. UD boastes a 1.06 goals against average while UWP holds a 1.13 goals against average. The sixth ranked regionally Spartans are 10-4-0 on the year. 

The Spartans and UWP played a scoreless first half with each team finishing the half with one shot on goal. UD held a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks. 

The second half featured more back-and-forth action from the two evenly matched teams. The difference in the game was a UWP shot from 30 yards out that snuck in the goal between the cross bar and Spartan goalkeeper Tiffany Duncan's (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) out reached hands. UWP held on to the 1-0 lead for the final 12 minutes to take the victory. The best scoring opportunity for UD came late as Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) was able to get behind the defense for a breakaway.  As Siepler nearly the box, the UWP goalkeeper rushed her and smothered the ball before Siepler could get the shot off. 

Liz Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Melissa Sawyer (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) each finished with two shots and one shot on goal. 

Duncan finished with two saves and one goal allowed in 90:00 minutes in goal. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to Iowa Conference action on Saturday, October 19th vs. Wartburg College. Game time at Oyen Field is 1:00 pm.
