Spartans Ready for IIAC Tournament

INDIANOLA, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team will be forced to make a return trip to Simpson (11-6-2, 4-3) after losing 3-0 on Tuesday night. The loss makes the Spartans the five seed in the upcoming Iowa Conference Tournament and will face the fourth seeded Storm. UD finished the regular season with a 6-10-1 overall record and 3-4 in the Iowa Conference. Dubuque has qualified for the IIAC Tournament seven straight years.

The Spartans fell behind early in the first half when a miscommunication by the UD defense put Simpson ahead 1-0 seven minutes into the game. UD finished the first half with two shots on goal as they trailed 1-0.

Simpson would add two goals in a three minute stretch to take a 3-0 lead with goals coming on a rebound and penalty kick.

Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) led the Spartan offense with three shots on goal. Forwards Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) and Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim ) each finished with four shots.

Goalkeeper Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) had six saves and three goals allowed while playing all 90 minutes.

Seniors Abraham Gonzalez (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula), Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon), and Winkler will play in their fourth straight IIAC Tournament.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will travel back to Simpson in the 1st Round of the Iowa Conference Tournament on November 2nd. Game time is 11:00 am.
