Oct 30, 2013

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team overcame a pressure situation on Wednesday night. If UD would win the road match they could force a three way tie for fifth place in the Iowa Conference or lose the match and finish tied for last place in the league. The Spartans captured set one 25-19 before losing the following two matches (21-25, 22-25). Facing a near end of their conference season, the Spartans responded by taking the fourth set 25-21 and carrying the momentum into the fifth set where they captured the match and the set with a 15-13 score. UD won the match 3-2 and earned the #5 seed in the 2013 Iowa Conference Volleyball Tournament starting next week.

The Spartans finished tied with Simpson and Central at 2-5 in league play, but held the tie breaks over both teams to earn the #5 seed. Klaudia Basierak led the Spartans with 25 kills in 80 attempts. Amy Tranel added 17 kills, but led both teams with a hitting percentage of .517! Meggie Schmidt was on target and finished with 37 set assists and a team high 18 digs.

UD finished the night hitting .211 after attempting 180 attacks in the battle weary match. The host Storm had an attack percentage of .225 after they attempted 191 attacks.
