Spartans Score 90 in Victory

MADISON, WISCONSIN - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team scored the highest point total since Coach Mark Noll took over the program in 2007. The Spartans 90-83 victory over Edgewood College (0-2) marked the most points scored since UD scored 100 points against Mt. Mary College on November 30, 2006. Freshman Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) led Dubuque with 18 points as 16 different Spartans scored in the contest. The Spartans are now 1-1 on the year. 

All 20 Spartans on the active roster appeared in the game. Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes. Brinker's team high 18 points came on 5-11 shooting from the floor, 6-8 from the free throw line, and 2-3  from beyond the three-point line. 

The Spartans closed the first half with a 13-3 run over the last 4:38 to take a 44-35 lead into halftime. Brinker made four free thows during the run to finish with 12 first half points. The UD bench played a big part in the first half success with a 24-4 advantage in bench scoring. Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) and Adrianna Stephens (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) each scored five first half points. 12 Spartans scored in the first half. 

UD opened up its biggest lead of the game with an 18-8 run that was capped by a Schmidt three-pointer with 6:53 left to gave the Spartans a 75-57 lead. Schmidt  finished with 11 points off the bench. 

On the defensive end of the court, Brinker and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) each had three steals as UD finished with a 14-8 advantage in steals. Springer also scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Angela Powell (Kaiserslautern, Germany/Kaiserslautern) had four blocks in her first collegiate game. 

Brittany Collier (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) finished with four assists. Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) contributed eight points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and was 4-4 from the free throw line.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Bethany Lutheran College (1-0) on Saturday, November 23rd at 2:00 pm on Jon Davison Court inside Stoltz Sports Center.
