Spartans Hang Tough in Close Loss to UW-La Crosse

LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team had two shots in the last minute of play to re-take the lead late on Saturday afternoon but were unable to connect. The Spartans hung around all game with UW-La Crosse, never trailing by more than five in the 66-63 loss to UWL. Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) led UD with 16 points. Dubuque moves to 3-2 on the season.
Fans in attendance at the UD-UWL game were in for a treat from start to finish as the two teams went back-and-forth for all forty minutes at Mitchell Hall on the campus of UWL. After two Eagle free throws with 47 seconds left in the game put UWL ahead 64-63, Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) missed a tough jumper in the lane putting the pressure back on the UD defense. The Spartans did what was needed to force a turnover with 33 seconds left in the game. After running the clock down to single digits, Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) drove into the lane before passing to Brittany Collier (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) who drove to the hoop but missed the jumper in the lane with 1 second left in the game.
Brinker led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points including 13 in the second half. She finished five of six from the field and six of eight from the free throw line. The freshman guard also had four blocks, three rebounds, and two steals in the contest. Making her first start of the year, Goetz finished with 11 points and five steals.
UD used an 9-0 run over a three minute stretch that ended with a layup by Collier at the 10:36 mark to give the Spartans there largest lead of the game at 45-37. Brinker scored six points during the run.
Collier led the Spartans on the boards with nine rebounds (4-offensive/5-defensive). Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) finished with seven rebounds and three blocks. Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) had five defensive rebounds and six total.
UWL finished the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 28-25 lead going into halftime. UD had a 12-6 advantage in steals in the first half.
The Spartans held UWL to 33.8% (23-68) shooting from the field. UD forced 28 turnovers in the game leading to 18 steals.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will have ten days off before they return to the court against UD alum Mark Beinborn and his Augustana Vikings (2-2) on December 10th at 6:00 pm.
