Spartans Fall to UD Alum Beinborn

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team fell to one of its own on Tuesday night in Stoltz Sports Center. The Spartans lost 63-54 to UD alum Mark Beinborn and his Augustana College Vikings (3-5). Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) led UD with 18 points and 8 rebounds (6-offensive). Dubuque is now 3-3 on the season. 

Augustana Head Coach Mark Beinborn is a 1998 graduate of UD and was a two-time team captain for the Men's Basketball team. In addition, Beinborn was a Second Team All-Iowa Conference selection in 1996-97 and 1997-98. 

The Spartans led 25-22 at the half behind 10 points from Snitker. The first half featured seven lead changes and two tied game situations. UD held a 15-11 advantage in turnovers forced with nine leading to steals. Dubuque led despite shooting 26.3% (10-38) from the field. 

After falling behind 10-4 after five minutes, UD used a 9-0 run over the next minute and a half to take its first lead of the game. Four Spartans scored in the run with Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) making three-pointers, an Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo)  jumper in the paint, and a free throw by Brittany Collier (Oswego, Ill./Oswego). UD closed the first half with six straight points from Snitker. 

Springer scored in double figures for the third time this year with 12 points on two three-pointers and 4-4 shooting from the free throw line. Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and three assists. ‌‌

UD finished the game with a 16-12 advantage in steals. The Dubuque bench recorded 10 steals led by Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) and Collier with four each. Dubuque shot a season high 80.0% (16-20) from the free throw line with Snitker and Springer each going 4-4. 

Augustana outscored UD 19-5 over the first ten minutes of the second half opening up thier largest lead of the game at 12 points. The Spartans would not go away quietly responding with a 14-2 run over a four minute span to tie the game at 46-46 with 5:18 left in the game. Augie made ten straight free throws in the last minute to pull away. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to action on Friday, December 13th at home against North Central University (Minn). Game time in Stoltz is 5:30 pm.
