Spartans Score Over 100 Points for Third Straight Game

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team once again scored over 100 points in victory on Friday night. The nearly 60 degree difference in temperatue between Dubuque and St. Pete did not effect the Spartans as they beat Eureka College (6-3) 105-79 in their first game of the Basketball Destinations St. Pete Classic. UD finished the game shooting 50.0% (41-82) from the field. Dubuque improves to 6-3 overall and won their third game. 

The Spartans were led offensively by Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with a season high 24 points on 8-11 shooting from the field, 4-4 from the free throw line, and 4-4 from three-point range. Kotas also pulled down eight rebounds (6-defensive/2-offensive) in the game. Over the last three games, she is averaging 19.3 points per game in just 18.3 minutes played per game. 

The teams appeared evenly matched over the first eight minutes with UD leading during most of the stretch before Eureka took a 18-17 lead at the 12:09 mark. The Spartans responded with a 14-1 run over the next four minutes to take control of the game for good. Back-to-back three-pointers by Kotas pushed the Dubuque lead to 15 as they would lead by double figures the remainder of the game with a first half lead peaking at 22 points on a free throw by Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) at the 2:55 mark.

UD finished the first half with a 52-34 lead including holding a 30-8 advantage in points in the paint. Nine Spartans scored in the half for UD with Heather Chapman (Ingelside, Ill./Grant) scoring nine points off the bench. 

Dubuque opened up its largest lead of the game at 92-59 after a 19-2 run over four minutes ending with 7:09 left in the game on a Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) layup. Kotas scored seven points during the four minute stretch. 

Freshman Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) finished with 16 points and eight rebounds (6-offensive/2-defensive) while shooting 7-9 from the field. Fellow freshman Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) also scored 11 points. Point guard Jessica Goetz (Arrowhead, Wis./Sussex) had a team high seven assists. 

The Spartans defense forced 18 turnovers which led to 13 steals and a 25-12 advantage in points off turnovers. Schmidt and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) each had a team high three steals. UD forced Eureka to shoot 36.8% (25-68) from the field for the game. 

All 20 Spartans played for the third straight game. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will play Alverno College on Saturday, December 21st in their final game of the St. Pete Classic. Game time is 4:30 pm (Central Time Zone).
