Spartans Pick-up Hard Earned Road Win

PELLA, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team picked-up a hard earned road victory on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans used a balanced scoring attack to win 53-52 against Central College (9-4, 1-1 IIAC). Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) led UD with 10 points five rebounds (two-offensive/three-defensive), four steals, and three assists. Dubuque is now 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Iowa Conference.

A layup by Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with 4:29 left in the game put UD ahead 51-47. Over the next four minutes, the Spartans would be held scoreless as Central took a 52-51 lead late in the game. With 20 seconds remaining in the game, Kotas found Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) for a layup and the eventual game winner. Central took the clock down to five seconds before missing a three-pointer. The Dutch grabbed the offensive rebound but turned the ball over after the rebound. 

Dubuque held a 29-25 lead at halftime with nine Spartans scoring in the opening 20 minutes.  The Spartans played tough defense in the half holding Central to 26.9% (7-26) shooting from the field including 2-10 from beyond the arc. 

UD turned a four point lead into an 11 point lead within the first five minutes of the second half with a 11-4 run that put the Spartans ahead 40-29 at the 15:20 mark. 

Kotas led the Spartans with 11 points and seven rebounds in the game. Remakel came off the bench for eight points, six rebounds (three-offensive/three-defensive), and three blocks. Heather Chapman (Ingleside, Ill./Grant) also contributed to the Spartans strong inside game with five points and five rebounds (four offensive/one defensive). UD held a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint.

The Spartans victory improved Head Coach Mark Noll's record to 13-0 versus Central in his seven years at UD. Dubuque has now won games scoring in the 50's, 60's, 80's, 90's, 100's, 110's, and 120's. 

UP NEXT: UD will play a pair of home games next week beginning with Luther College (10-3, 1-1 IIAC) on Wednesday, January 15th at 6:00 pm. The Spartans will also host Buena Vista University (6-7, 0-2 IIAC) on Saturday, January 18th at 2:00 pm on Jon Davison Court inside Stoltz Sports Center.
