Spartans Sit Atop the IIAC at 3-0

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team remained atop of the Iowa Conference standing with a victory at home on Wednesday night. The Spartans 66-60 win against Luther moves their record to 3-0 in league play. UD was led by Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) with 14 points including seven in the final four minutes of the game. Dubuque is now 10-4 overall and 5-1 on Jon Davison Court this season.

After a pair of free throws by Luther cut the Spartans lead to one at 53-52 with 4:46 left in the game, Brinker took over. She converted five of six free throws down the stretch while also making a scoop shot layup as the shot clock was nearing zero. The freshman guard finished 7-10 from the free throw line and pulled down three rebounds in the game. The Spartans 13-4 run over the last four plus minutes also included three free throws by Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) and three points by Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). Kotas finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

On the defensive end of the court, Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) led the Spartans with five blocks while also pulled down nine rebounds. Junior guard Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) recorded three steals. The IIAC leader in steals, Goetz has a steal in all 14 games this year.

The Spartans largest lead of the night came near the half way point of the first half when UD went ahead 19-6 after a pair of three throws by Springer. Adrianna Stephens (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) accounted for five of her 11 points during the stretch. Brinker closed out the first half scoring with a four point play with under 30 seconds to play that gave UD a 29-26 lead at the break. 

Dubuque has beaten Luther in nine of the last 10 meeting between the two squads. UD held the Norse to 28.6% shooting from the field including 0-12 from three in the second half. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Buena Vista University (6-8, 0-3) on Saturday, January 18th. Game time in the Stoltz Sports Center is 2:00 pm.
