Garcia Claims IIAC Performer of the Week Honors

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque basketball player Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Central basketball player Colby Taylor have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 23, 2014. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in five sports.

University of Dubuque senior Nick Garcia (Leimen, Germany/Heidelberg) was named IIAC Men's Tennis Performer of the Week. Garcia went 4-0 on the week at #1 Singles and #1 Doubles as UD went 1-1 as a team. He extended his winning streak at #1 Singles to five games and ten sets with 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 wins on Saturday at Knox. In doubles play, he teamed with Dishon Deering (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) to win 8-5 vs. Ripon College and 8-6 vs. Knox College. The Spartans 7-2 win against Ripon was the first of the year for first-year head coach Claudio Giraldi.

The 2012 Iowa Conference Individual Tournament Flight "A" Singles Champion, Garcia has been named IIAC Performer of the Week nine times. As a sophomore in 2011 he won the award five times while setting schools records for singles wins (33) and total wins (50). Garcia is closing in on 100 career singles wins with 97 wins and also owns the school record for total wins with 162 wins for the Blue and White. In 2011 he won the USTA-ITA Midwest Regional Championship and earned All-American honors.
