Softball Begins in Dome

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Plenty of Iowa Conference softball teams start their season this weekend, including the University of Dubuque Spartans. Not many teams competing outside in the single digits, UD begins under the warm confines of the Rochester Regional Stadium on the campus of Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minn. The facility is the fifth largest in the state of Minnesota and provides plenty of softball action this weekend.

The Spartans begins it's fourth season under the direction of head coach Wendi Wipperfurth. UD finished with a 16-18 overall and a 7-7 Iowa Conference record last season. The #5-seeded Spartans qualified for the IIAC Tournament and made it into the semi-finals after knocking off #4-seeded Simpson College Storm. UD also earned it's first Regional Ranking last season when they were ranked #8 in the Midwest Regional Rankings in 2013.

The Spartans return leading hitter and a Third Team All-Midwest Region by National Fastpitch Coaches Association after finishing the year batting .409. She led UD in hits, runs, RBI, home runs, total bases, walks, steals, batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. She had an on-base percentage of .518. Meyer also led the Spartans in slugging percentage (.624), on-base percentage (.518), runs (25), hits (38), runs batted in (22), home runs (5), total bases (58), walks (21), and stolen bases (8). She was also one of only three Spartans to start all 34 games last season and has started 109 consecutive games. 

UD begins their season on March 1 Vs. St. Norbert College at 5:00 p.m.; Vs. Gustavus Adolphus at 9:00 p.m. The Spartans continue their opening weekend on March 2 Vs. UW-Steven's Point at 3:00 p.m. and finish up Vs. Carleton at 5:00 p.m.
