Valcin Increases Division-III Best Pole Vault Height

PLATTEVILLE/STEVENS POINT, WISCONSIN - The University of Dubuque Men's Track & Field team competed at the UW-Platteville Final Qualifying Meet on Friday night in hopes in securing a spot in the up coming Division-III NCAA Indoor Championships. The Spartans won one event and set one school record. UD returned to the track on Saturday at the UW-Steven Point National Qualifier with another win in the Pole Vault. No team scores were recorded.

One Spartan not only qualified but increased his lead on the rest of D-III. By clearing 5.10m (16' - 8.75"), Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet) established himself as the favorite in the championships on March 14th and 15th at Nebraska Wesleyan. He now has a 5.5 inch lead on the next closest competitor in Division-III. Valcin returned to action on Saturday with his tenth pole vault win in 11 meets this season. He cleared 4.82m (15' - 9.75m) to tie for first place.

UD hurdler Evan Zurbuchen (Hollandale, Wis./Madison West) moved into 30th on the Division-III performance list with his fourth place finish in the 60m Hurdles. Zurbuchen crossed the finish line in 8.34 seconds, the third fastest time in school history. A pair of Spartans qualified for the finals of the 60m Dash with Kyle Williams (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) running a 7.07, the tenth fastest time all-time at UD. Freshman Jimmie Williams (Chicago, Ill./Calumet) took fifth in the 60m Dash at 7.11 seconds and second in the 200m Dash at 24.02 seconds. 

On the distance side, Payton Nevills (Savanna, Ill./West Carroll) finished sixth in the 3,000m Run at 9:00.34, the second fastest time in school history. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans Rick Valcin will compete at the NCAA Division-III Indoor Championships hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan on March 14th - 15th. Valcin was the only Spartan to be selected for the championships.
