Pictures, Literally, at an Exhibition

From April 12 – 14, students from the University of Dubuque’s computer graphics program will exhibit their visual interpretations of Mussorgsky’s orchestral Pictures at an Exhibition at Heritage Center’s Bisignano Art Gallery. The exhibit, titled Pictures, Literally, at an Exhibition, opens at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 in conjunction with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s Mussorgsky performance at 7:30 p.m. in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall.
In 1874 Modest Mussorgsky composed his famous Pictures at an Exhibition, based on ten drawings and watercolors produced by his recently deceased friend, the architect and artist Victor Hartmann. According to Alan Garfield, gallery director and head of the computer graphics department, “Most of the works that inspired the composer are lost to us. They’re either yet undiscovered or, sadly, destroyed by time and neglect.” And yet, he says, Ravel’s score quite clearly lends itself to visual forms and colors. The Gallery show was inspired by Ravel’s symphonic interpretation of the piano music of Mussorgsky. Included in the show are the 10 images from the 10 movements and 5 of the more abstract promenades.
“Ravel’s music is quite evocative and the students had no problems creating these rather colorful images based on each movement,” Garfield said.
