Spartans Sweep Good Friday Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque track and field teams hosted the 2014 University of Dubuque Good Friday Open on April 18. The Spartans claimed both the women's and men's team titles in near ideal conditions on the Douglas J. Miller track in Dubuque. The women won the meet with 164 points while the men cruised to a first place showing by finishing with 185 points.
The Spartans had a record-setting afternoon in field events. Katie Herbig re-captured the school record in the women's hammer throw at 43.79m (148'-11.0") and teammate Conner Hirt won the men's hammer throw with a school record toss of 47.33m (155'-3.0"). Amy Tranel placed first in javelin with a new school record toss of 34.10m (111'-10").
UD also had a winning day by placing high in the following events. The women's 4x400M relay (Nikki McKenzie, Brittany Burns, Kim Trinco, and Tieisha Starks) claimed victory in a time 4:05.87. Kiersten Wenthold wins the Women's 800m Run with a time of 2:27.53. Nikki McKenzie wins the Women's Triple Jump fter leaping 11.17M. McKenzie (5.28M) and Jamyia Catchings (4.98M) finish 1-2 in the women's long jump. Ronald Brown wins the shot put at 14.04m (46'-0.75") and places 2nd in the discus at 43.99m (144'-4.0"). Rick Valcin won two events of the day by clearing 4.93m (16'-2.0") in the pole vault and winning men's 100M dash in a time of :10.90. Jeremy Lawson wins men's javelin after throwing 50.15m. Senior Evan Zurbuchen celebrating his birthday, won the men's 400M IH Hurdles at :55.81 seconds, the 3rd fastest time in UD History. Peyton Nevills was first in the men's 1,500M run in 4:11.30.
The Spartans are preparing for the Drake Relays next week in Des Moines and for the Loras Invite in Dubuque.
