DUBUQUE, Iowa - With the possibility of a five-way tie for the IIAC title alive at the beginning of the day, the Spartans along with four others believed they had a chance to capture the league title. The University of Dubuque softball team kept #14-ranked Central College in check, but dropped the doubleader 0-4 in game one and 1-3 in game two. Despite the losses, the Spartans finished the conference in 5th place and will compete next week in the IIAC Tournament hosted by the #1 seeded Coe College Kohawks.

The tournament champion receives the league's automatic berth in the 62-team NCAA Division III Championship. The 2014 IIAC Tournament schedule is as follows:

In game one on Saturday, the Spartans collected five hits on senior day. UD trailed 0-2 through five innings, before the Dutch added a couple of more runs in the top of the sixth. The Spartans left on base seven runners in the loss. Kelli Gerace captured the lone extra base hit with a double in the second inning.

Amanda Williams took the loss on the mound and would allow just two earned runs while striking out six Dutch batters. She faced 28 batters and went the complete seven innings.

In the second game, UD out hit the Dutch 6-3, but three errors allowed the Dutch to extend their innings. The Spartans trailed 0-3 through five innings before they sliced the lead to just a pair of runs. The Spartans would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs, but were only able to get one run across the plate. UD once again challenged the bottom of the seventh with runners at second and third before the day ended on back-to-back ground outs.

Meggie Schmidt and Karlee Grunder would both finish the afternoon with a double. Amber Meyer earned the lone RBI of the afternoon.
