CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball opened the 2014 IIAC Tournament not the way they had planned, but they responded on Saturday by knocking the #14 Central College Dutch out of the tournament Saturday morning by a score of 5-4 and battled into 10 innings in the semifinals and lost to Buena Vista University 2-1. The tough IIAC competition proved itself with both semifinal contests being extended into extra innings.

The Spartans opened game one on Saturday by scoring one run on one hit in the first inning. Meggie Schmidt walked and Caitlyn Aulwes grounded out to 3b on a sac bunt which advanced Schmidt to second. Amber Meyer doubled to left center, sending Schmidt home for the RBI. Hannah Koerperich struck out swinging and Tori Woltz was intentionally walked. Grunder popped up to catcher for the final out. UD held the Dutch hitless for the first two innings until they scroed four runs on five hits to end the third inning. 

A scoreless fourth inning, the floodgates opened for hits at the top of the fifth for the Spartans. Schmidt homered to left field. Aulwes struck out looking for the first out. Meyer singled to left field and Megan Loes singled through the left side, advancing Meyer to second. The Dutch swapped pitcher Haycraft for Smith. The switch was proved futile as Tori Woltz stepped up and homered to left field, scoring Loes and Meyer for three RBI's. Carlee Grunder grounded out to 1b unassisted for the second out and Kelli Gerace popped up to 3b for final out. UD re-captured the lead 5-4. The Spartans held the Dutch socreless to earn the victory.

Loes earned the win on the mound, allowing just two hits in 4.2 innings after facing 15 batters. It was her seventh win of the season. UD captured their 22nd win of the 2014 season for head coach Wendi Wipperfurth.

 Buena Vista opened the semifinals with a run on two hits at the top of the first inning. the two squads weould both be held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when UD scored a run on two hits. Grunder singled to right field at leadoff. Williams out at first 3b to 2b on a sac bunt which advanced Grunder to second. Gerace flied out to lf for the second out. Gianna Kuras singled to left field, scoring Grunder for the RBI. Ainsley Billesbach popped up to 2b for the final out. 

The game would stay tied 1-1 through seven complete innings. The contest continued into extra inning after extra inning eventually reaching the 10th inning. UD allowed the Beavers to score one run on no hits after making an error on a throw to third base. As UD trailed 1-2, the Spartans were able to advanced Aulwes the third, but back-to-back pop ups left the tying run stranded at third.

Amanda Williams went the complete game and allowed one earned run in five hits, struck out five after she faced 39 batters in the heartbreaking loss.
