Wolfe Leads Spartans to IIAC Title

May 3, 2014

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's golf team won it's fourth IIAC Men's golf championship and it's first since 1975. Two factors remained the same, coach for this year's team champion and 1975 championship team was Jon Davison. The University of Dubuque captured its first men's golf title in 39 years after posting a 7-shot victory at the 2014 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Men's Golf Championships. With the victory, the Spartans automatically qualify for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships May 13-16 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

The Spartans fired a final-round 305 at Dubuque Golf and Country Club behind four rounds in the 70s to finish with a 72-hole total of 1210. Defending champion Central was second at 1217, followed by Luther (1232), Wartburg (1244) and Simpson (1252). Coe (1282), Loras (1316) and Buena Vista (1344) rounded out the team totals.

WOLFE TAKES MEDALIST HONORS: UD senior Eric Wolfe fired rounds of 75 and 73 on the final weekend to finish at 4-over 288 -- 11 strokes clear of Central's Desmond Stoll (299). Wolfe is the first Spartan since Jim Kinney in 1975 to capture medalist honors. He was also named IIAC Men's Golfer of the Year - the first for UD since Kinney in 1975. Wolfe's 288 total matches Central's Roger Dortch (2001) for the second lowest 72-hole championship total. The championship scoring record is 286, set by Loras' Pete Weber in 2005.

TOP-10 NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE. The Top-10 individuals (plus ties) earn all-Iowa Conference honors. In addition to Wolfe and Stoll, Luther's Tobias Kohl took third with a 300 total, just ahead of Coe's Tyler Gunderson at 301. Adam Squires (304) took fifth-place with a 1-hole playoff victory over Dubuque's Josh Schuberg, while Luther's Elliot Horst was seventh at 305. The Spartans Martin Odegard (309) birdied the fifth sudden-death playoff hole to take eighth place over Simpson's Conner Julifs and Wartburg's Michael Canfield, Simpson's Trent Lindemann, Luther's Andrew Peter and Central's David Watson finished in a 4-way tie for 10th place at 310.

It was the fourth such honor for Wolfe, Kohl and Odegard, the third for Gunderson and the second for Peter, Stoll, and Watson.

DAVISON NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR: UD's coach Jon Davison was named IIAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year for the second time, the other was in 1975. Davison was also named IIAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year on three occasions (1986, 1988, 1990).

The title is the fourth for Dubuque and the first since 1975 when another Jon Davison-coached squad posted a 2-stroke victory over Luther at Bunker Hill Golf Course, also in the Key City.
