May 5, 2014 | J.Crane

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men’s basketball team closed the books on a successful season with their team banquet on April 25th.  The Spartans squad had back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in school history and finished the 2013-14 season with a 21-5 overall record.  UD finished 10-4 in Iowa Conference play, one game behind league leading Central College. The Spartans earned the #2 seed in the IIAC Tournament which was the highest seed ever in the 17 years of the tournament.

The Spartans started the season with a school record 16-0 mark and were ranked as high as 23rd in the nation at one point this season. The senior class finished with 77 wins in their  four year career which is tied for the most in the programs history.  The seniors also won 17+ games each of the past four seasons and finished no lower than 3rd place in their four years at UD!

The Spartans finished first in the Iowa Conference in several statistics including scoring defense (70.9 ppg), scoring margin (+8.7), steals (168), field goal defense (.422), three-point field goal defense (.290), turnover margin (+2.27), attendance (11,917 - 917 per home game), and winning percentage (80.8%). This year’s team also finished 18th in the country in three point field goal defense at 29.7 percent and finished 17th in the country in three point field goal offense at 39.3 percent.

“This year was a special year for our team.  We came up just short of some goals but we had an outstanding group of young men that competed and played for each other all season," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Robbie Sieverding.  "We played 26 games and had a chance to win every one of those games in the final minute which is a testament to how our team prepared and performed each day.  The seniors did a great job of leading and really left their mark here with our basketball program.  Our returners understand how hard they must work in order for our team to reach it’s full potential and I believe this group will have a great summer.”

Individually, the Spartans were the only team to place three student-athletes among the top-10 in the IIAC in scoring average. Andre Norris finished third at 18.2 points per game, Chris Frazier was ninth at 13.7 ppg, and Gage Heffernan arounded out the top 10 at 13.6 ppg. A two-way threat, Heffernan led the IIAC with 44 steals and was sixth with 17 blocks. Frazier also led the conference in three-pointers made for the second straight season with 73 in 2013-14 and 75 in 2012-13.
