Spartans Compete at 2014 NCAA Men's Golf Championships

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA - The University of Dubuque Men's Golf Team advanced to the compete among the best of the best in Division-III at the NCAA D-III Men's Golf Championships at the Grandover Resort. The Spartans dream season ended after Round 2, as they were tied for 29th, failing to make the cut. The highlight of the first two rounds of the championships was Martin Odegard (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) making a hole-in-one on the par three, 12th hole on the East Course. As a team, UD finished with a score of 624 (309-315) which was +48 over par.

A total of 211 individual student-athletes played in the championships from 41 teams (plus six individuals selected from non-qualifying teams). The top 15 teams and six individuals not on an advancing team made the 36-hole cut. Grandover Resort is home to a East and West Course with the teams alternating between the courses over the course of the championships.

In addition to the hole-in-one, Odegard was the Spartans top performer with a score of 149 (75-74) which was +5 over par. He finished with four birdies and an eagle. Over the course of the 36 holes, the senior was par or better on 29 holes. Troy Krueger (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) had the second lowest score of the tournament at 154 (76-78), +10 over par. Krueger had four birdies with three coming on day one. Eric Wolfe (Cuba City, Wis./Cuba City Community) had a team high six birdies on his way to a score of 155 (78-77).

For the 2013-14 season, UD had nine first place, one second place, and two third place finishes in 13 tournaments. The Spartans began the year with wins at the Edgewood Fall Classic, Loras Fall Invite, and Division-III Midwest Region Fall Classic. After a second place finish at the Clarke University Fall Classic, UD finished the Fall Season with wins at the University of Dubuque Invite, Elmhurst Fall Invitational, and the Ronnie Eastman Invitational. 

The Spring Season began with a win at the Webster College Gorlock Spring Invite before a third place finish behind #1 ranked Illinois Wesleyan on their home course at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Invite. The Spartans rebounded to win the Loras Spring Invitational and a convincing seven shot victory at the Iowa Conference Championships.

Individually, Wolfe led the Spartans with three medalist honors, seven Top-5, and ten Top-10 finishes in 13 events. Wolfe won at the Elmhurst Fall Invite, Ronnie Eastman Invite, and earned Iowa Conference Player of the Year with an 11 shot victory at the IIAC Championships. Odegard had nine Top-10 finishes and a win at the Loras Spring Invite. Mitchell Sobotta (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) began the year with a win at the Edgewood Fall Classic.
