DUBUQUE, Iowa-  In a rare midweek, conference doubleheader, the University of Dubuque baseball team split with Luther College, rallying to take game one 3-2 and rallied again in game two but fell short, 4-5 in 10 innings.

UD grabbed the first run of the game when Marquis Dew drilled a double to deap center field to bring Will Doherty around from first base. Luther took the lead after scoring one run in each the fifth and sixth innings to go up 2-1. UD evened things up in the seventh inning when Michael Salazar to left field to score Eric Hall, but Ryan Karrick was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Thomas Kempf worked a two out walk.  A wild pitch and another walk to Will Doherty put runners on first and second, when Kelvin Medrano hit a check swinging blooper to left field where it would drop and score pinch runner Kyle May.

Jacob Padilla picked up his second win of the year as he went eight innings, giving up two runs, zero earned runs on just six hits. Nathan Schneidermann struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

Just like in game one, the Spartans rallied late. This time the Spartans were down to their last strike, when Tyler Imrich ripped a line drive down the right field line for a triple and scoring Jarad Clevenger who was pinch running after Eric Hall reached on a one out single.  However, UD could not come up with another two out hit to win the game sending it to extras.

In the 10th, Luther got that run right back and another after two UD errors to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 10th. Tyler Lewan tried to spark another UD comeback as he laced a one out triple down the right field line and scored as Will Doherty singled to right field. After a strikeout, Marquis Dew kept the Spartans alive with a single back up the middle to put runners on first and second with two outs. The next batter, Jarad Clevenger could not manage anything as Luther’s Nate Beckman struck him out to complete his 10 inning complete game.

Eric Hall was the lone Spartan to collect more than one hit in game two, going 3-4 with an RBI.

UD plays host to crosstown rival, Loras College this weekend, game one of the series is at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Spartans Field.
